What is the Berkshire Sculpture Park?

The Berkshire Sculpture Park was an idea by Philip Cook of involve Community, Bracknell, after wandering his streets and finding public artwork, but no information. Teaming up with the University of Reading and their Internship Scheme, Charlotte Abraham of Charlotte Abraham Art and a third year student at the University, became the Berkshire Sculpture Park coordinator and led the journey into mapping the public art of Berkshire.

After only 6 weeks, Charlotte had collected data on over 150 artworks in the Berkshire county, documenting each one and adding them to a central map. Developing the project further, Charlotte included routes for local areas and established connections with local art groups and societies for the benefit of the future of the project and art in the community.

The Berkshire Sculpture Park Project Aims:

  • To promote permanent public art through an easily accessible map
  • To be inclusive of all permanent public artwork on display
  • To promote the benefits of walking, being outdoors, and viewing artwork for all ages

What is Art?

In the Berkshire Sculpture Park we consider art to be any expression of human creative skill and imagination. This includes, but is not limited to; painting, mosaic and sculpture. Sculpture is the broadest category of art as it can be found in the form of statues, contemporary sculpture or upon memorials. All of these have been considered and included in the map of the Berkshire Sculpture Park.

Permanent public artwork is key in the Berkshire Sculpture park to ensure accessibility all year round. To find out more about the artworks and categories that we have mapped, head over to our Artworks page.
